Couple eloping in Shenandoah National Park

Virginia Elopement Photographer

You've decided to elope in Virginia. Maybe you've been dreaming about a mountaintop ceremony in Shenandoah. Maybe you want the fog rolling in over the Blue Ridge at sunrise. Maybe you just know that a big traditional wedding isn't your thing, and you're done apologizing for it.

I’m Alysa — a Virginia elopement photographer and your unofficial adventure partner. This state has everything an elopement could ask for, and I’d love to help you make the most of it.

Why Virginia is perfect for eloping

Virginia has everything. Dramatic mountain ridgelines in the Shenandoah Valley. The winding beauty of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Historic towns with stone churches and cobblestone streets. Virginia Beach’s wide, quiet shores in the off-season. The lush forests of Southwest Virginia that most people never discover.

And unlike some states that make the marriage license process complicated, Virginia is remarkably elopement-friendly. No waiting period. No residency requirement. $30 fee. Valid immediately. You can get your license in the morning and be married on a mountaintop by afternoon.

What a Virginia elopement with me looks like

Every elopement looks different — that’s the whole point. A sunrise ceremony at altitude before the crowds arrive. A golden hour vow exchange at an overlook with a bottle of champagne waiting. A short hike in to a quieter spot where it’s just the two of you.

What stays the same is how I work: documentarian first, director second. I’m not choreographing your day into a series of magazine poses. I’m paying attention — to the light, to the between-moments, to the things you’ll want to remember when this is all a beautiful, distant dream.

I’m happy to help you think through your vision and your location, talk through permits if you need them, and figure out timing around the light. Then I’ll stay out of the way and let your day actually happen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need a permit to elope in Shenandoah National Park? +

It depends. If you have 15 guests or fewer, no permit is required. 16 guests or more require a Special Use Permit from the National Park Service — and I'm happy to help walk you through the application process.

Can I get married in Virginia as a non-resident? +

Yes. Virginia issues marriage licenses to non-residents with no waiting period. You apply in person at any Virginia circuit court clerk's office with valid government-issued ID. (Fees are set by the state — check your county clerk's office for the current amount.)

How far in advance should I book an elopement photographer? +

For popular locations like Shenandoah, booking 6–12 months out is a good guideline, especially for peak fall (October) and summer. Last-minute openings happen too — it's always worth reaching out.

What areas of Virginia do you cover? +

I photograph throughout all of Virginia — Shenandoah National Park, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Northern Virginia, Virginia Beach and the Eastern Shore, Charlottesville, Southwest Virginia, and everywhere in between.

How long does an elopement session typically last? +

It varies — a focused sunrise ceremony might be a couple of hours; a full adventure day with portraits, ceremony, and exploring can run much longer. We'll figure out what makes sense for your vision.

Do you help with elopement planning beyond just photography? +

Yes — location ideas, permit guidance, timeline thoughts, and general 'wait, what do we actually do?' support. I'm happy to help think through the pieces of your day.
