March Engagement Session at Raven’s Roost Overlook
April 30, 2025
Raven’s Roost is an absolutely amazing overlook at mile marker 10.7 on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia. It’s one of the most popular overlooks in Virginia and for good reason.
Its popularity comes from the stunning blue ridge mountain layers, perfect vantage point for the sunset, and ease of access as you don’t have to hike to get the stunning views. I’ve been photographing at Raven’s Roost for years now and I have some perfect tips for your session there!
Quick tips for your session or elopement at Raven’s Roost
Arrive earlier than your start time especially if it’s around sunset time. The parking lot is only big enough for about 6-7 cars. Additionally, you may want to pick another option if your elopement has more than 10 guests as your guests’ cars may not all fit in the parking lot.
Watch out for glass as you’re walking the trail below the parking lot. Unfortunately, with its popularity, Raven’s Roost is prone to littering, especially broken glass bottles. So just watch your step as you take the trail.
Try for a weekday if you can. Weekends can get very busy on the Blue Ridge Parkway. If you’re looking for a more private session or elopement, I recommend trying for weekdays or picking another spot. Shenandoah National Park is only 10 miles from Raven’s Roost and has many alternative options.
If you need a backup overlook for your session or elopement, Rockfish Valley Parking Overlook is also beautiful. It is east-facing so the sunrises here will be gorgeous but you won’t see much of the sunset. Although, keep in mind that, sometimes, the sunset colors are better on the other side of the mountain.
Any season is perfect at Raven’s Roost, it’s so versatile! This particular one was actually taken in late March so the trees are bare but, you still get the beautiful blue hues from the Blue Ridge Mountains even with the cloudy weather.
Have fun and make sure to practice Leave No Trace!
