First off, congrats on being pretty badass. Choosing to elope is such an amazing and freeing choice. You can now throw out all the expectations, what you’re “supposed” to do, the opinions, and the obligations.
Take a moment and feel how good that feels.
Buuuut when there are no “rules”, it can be really overwhleming. I feel that, I get it. That’s where I come in. Your elopement planner and photographer making your elopement day as stress-free and beautiful as possible.
One of my most requested locations is Shenandoah National Park. I’ve spent years exploring and photographing this amazing National Park. And I’m going share with you exactly how to elope in this gorgeous and wonderful park.
this is where you get to brainstorm with each other and really think about what you’d like your elopement day to look like without being hindered by logistics. Think about what kind of food you picture yourselves sharing, what dream airBnB you see yourselves in, what activities and hikes in or around the park you’d like to enjoy (there’s no limit! dream big!)
You’ve decided on Shenandoah National Park but, where in the park are you going to go? The park is huge but, don’t worry cause I know all the best overlooks and trails to go to for your ceremony and to get those stunning portraits. We can talk all about different locations and which one fits you the best!
Next, you’ll need to think about who you want to invite for your elopement.
I tell my couples all the time that it’s so easy to snowball with their guest count but, don’t do it!! Stay true to yourselves and don’t give in to outside pressure.
If you want an elopement that’s just the two of you, do it. It’s okay.
If you want an elopement that’s just the two of you and then meet up with family and friends to celebrate later, do it. It’s okay.
Set your boundaries where you are comfortable and stick to it. I know this can be so hard but, you can do this!
Next think about how long you’ll want to stay. Do you want to go for a week? Just a weekend? Whatever you choose, I’m here for you to guide you to some of the most incredible places in Shenandoah National Park and the surrounding area.
Once you’ve decided who you’d like to be present, you’ll then either need a Shenandoah National Park special use permit for your elopement or you won’t. Here’s how to know…
If you have 16 or more guests (this count has to include the two of you, myself, your officiant, and anyone else involved with the ceremony), you’ll need to apply for a special use permit. I know it looks intimidating but, don’t worry! I’m here to guide you through the process. Just so you know, the permit must be submitted at least 30 days prior to your elopement and does include a $150 permit fee.
If you have 15 or fewer guests, then you don’t need a permit at all. Isn’t that amazingly simple?!
Now that we’ve got the permit logistics out of the way, we can talk vendors you’d like (whether that’s hair and makeup artists, bakers, caterers, florists, even dress/suit and shoes recommendations, I have your back!) and any accommodations in the area. I can direct you to the best vendors and find you an airBnB that’s perfect for beautiful getting ready photos.
We can also plan out all those wonderful and adventurous activities that you’ve dreamt up for your elopement day! I’ll guide you to the best hikes within Shenandoah National Park and the best activities in the surrounding area.
Picture yourselves dancing your first dance at the bottom of a waterfall as the cool mist swirls around you.
Or imagine relaxing by a cozy fire while sipping incredible wine (or beer!) at a local Virginia winery (or brewery!) overlooking the stunning blue ridge mountains.
Or even sharing a slice of pizza at a local pizzeria? Can you see it? I can 🙂
Now that you have details in place and out of the way, you can start thinking about timeline. Some key things to think about with your timeline is sunrise and sunset time for your day and flexibility.
Remember that it’s okay to be spontaneous within your timeline and don’t forget to allow extra time for travel between locations and activities.
Packing for Shenandoah National Park can be tricky but, I’m here to help! Remember to pack layers and bring extra clothing. Weather in the park can be unpredictable, it can go from sunny and warm to rainy and cold in minutes so keep that in mind. Also don’t forget things like sunscreen, extra water, snacks, an spare set of clothes, blankets, etc.
Pack everything you need for your ceremony. This could include permits, rings, marriage and driver’s licenses, vow books, accessories, the cake, blanket to sit on, picnic basket, etc.
Don’t forget to communicate with your guests on where to park, what to bring/pack, and the principles of Leave No Trace.
I recommend packing a few days early so you can come back to what you’ve already packed and make sure you’re not missing anything.
But most of all, RELAX, everything will be wonderful and beautiful because you’ve carefully planned out a day that’s true to you.
Be present.
Breathe.
Soak in the moments.
Every second will be intentional and meaningful all while surrounded by the incredible, natural beauty of Shenandoah National Park.

I’ll have your back the entire way when it comes down to planning out all the amazing details of your incredible elopement in Shenandoah National Park.
